League of Women Voters hosting 'Light for Our Democracy' events during Trump's address to Congress
The nonpartisan organization The League of Women Voters is hosting "Light for Our Democracy" events across the country during President Donald Trump's address to Congress tonight.
"Light for Our Democracy" Texas in-person events will be in Austin on the south side of the state capitol building at 7:30 p.m. Others are in The Woodlands and Granbury, Texas.
The Houston chapter will host a virtual "Light for Our Democracy" at 7:30 p.m.
Here's what to know about the organization and why they are hosting these nationwide events.

What is the League of Women Voters?
The national group is a political grassroots network and membership organization that supports the freedom to vote as a nonpartisan issue, according to information from the League of Women Voters.
It was founded in 1920 through a merger of the National Council of Women Voters and the National American Women’s Suffrage Association. There are now more than 700 leagues across the U.S.
The members produce nonpartisan voters guides during elections and promote fair and safe voting in elections.
What is happening with 'Light for Our Democracy?'
The group calls for people to gather nationwide during the address.
"On Tuesday, March 4, as the President addresses Congress, we the people will gather in communities nationwide. Instead of tuning in, the League of Women Voters will be meeting across the country to reflect, take action, and stand in solidarity," according to a League of Women Voters description of the event. "Democracy is more than a system of government — it is the power of the people. It starts with us, our voices, and our votes. At a time when democracy is under threat, we are calling on you — and countless others across the country — to stand together in its defense."
They are calling the gatherings "a peaceful and unified space to come together for the health of our democracy, the future of our nation, and the well-being of all its people."
