Action News! September 2024

September heralds the end of summer and the beginning of fall—a busy time for LWV Texas and our local Leagues across the state. We’ve been hard at work already this election season, focusing on voter registration, hosting candidate forums, and preparing our trusted nonpartisan Voters Guide.
However, recent rhetoric from our Texas Attorney General and Governor has raised concerns within the voting rights community. Their claims about non-citizens intentionally registering and voting in our elections are not grounded in fact. Let’s be clear: there is no credible evidence of widespread non-citizen voting in Texas.
Texas law already requires voters to affirm their citizenship status, and election officials use robust verification systems to ensure voter eligibility. Non-citizens who attempt to register or vote face severe consequences, including imprisonment or deportation. These safeguards should reinforce confidence in the integrity of our elections, not be used to sow doubt.
The rarity of non-citizen voting incidents highlights the strength of our election processes. The checks and balances in place are doing exactly what they are meant to do—protect the integrity of our vote. This success story should be celebrated, not undermined by unfounded allegations.
The League remains steadfast in its mission to empower voters and defend democracy. I am deeply proud of our League members and volunteers, who tirelessly dedicate themselves to registering voters, serving as poll workers and monitors, organizing candidate forums, preparing voter guides, and providing crucial voter information to the public.

Order Your Voters Guides by Sept. 6th!
|
Orders for printed LWV Texas Voters Guides are due Sept 6th! Order here.
Printed Guides will be shipped by Oct 6th. PDF versions of the Guide will be posted on LWVTexas.org in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Simple Chinese, and the online, interactive version of the Guide will be available at VOTE411.org.
For races covered in the LWV Texas Voters Guide, all candidates on the ballot with opponents on the ballot are invited to participate. Our team makes at least three attempts to reach each candidate via phone, email, social media, and, when necessary, by direct mail. When candidates refuse to participate in opportunities for their future constituents to learn more about them, it hurts voters! Please contact the candidates in races that are important to you to make sure they are participating in the Guide! Call them, message them, post on their website or social media pages. We want ALL candidates to give voters information they need to confidently cast their ballots in November!

NVRA Notice and Records Request to Texas
|
The League of Women Voters of Texas, along with other voting rights organizations, sent a letter to Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson. The letter reminds the secretary that systematic purging of voters from Texas rolls within the 90-day period before a federal election and targeting naturalized citizens for removal from the voter rolls violates the National Voter Registration Act. The letter also demands Texas promptly provide records as to recent removal of thousands of voters from the state’s rolls, given the potential for erroneous disenfranchisement of many Texas.

National Voter Registration Day
|
Leagues across Texas have vibrant activities planned for National Voter Registration Day, which is September 17th, 2024. The League of Women Voters is the biggest nationwide partner engaging in National Voter Registration Day! This is a nonpartisan civic holiday celebrating our democracy. Celebrated every September, National Voter Registration Day involves volunteers and organizations from all over the country hitting the streets in a single day of coordinated field, technology, and media efforts.
According to U.S. Census data from 2020, as many as 1 in 4 eligible Americans are not registered to vote. Every year, millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote because they miss a registration deadline, don’t update their registration, or aren’t sure how to register. National Voter Registration Day efforts are designed to ensure every eligible voter has the opportunity to vote, creating broad awareness of voter registration opportunities to reach tens of thousands of voters who may not register otherwise.
