Action News! August 2025

LWV Texas | Published on 8/1/2025

Greetings!

Tell Texas Lawmakers: Don’t Mess with Our Democracy!

The Texas Legislature is rushing through a flawed, mid-decade redistricting process, without new census data, transparency, or meaningful public input.

As part of theFair Maps Texas Coalition, the League of Women Voters of Texas is standing up against this power grab.

Last week, more than 3,000 Texans testified at redistricting hearings across the state, and over 4,000 public comments were submitted. Clickhereto view the testimony given by LWV Texas at the hearing in Austin. The message was loud and clear: the process is broken, and many believe it's being rigged on purpose..

On Wednesday, lawmakers released a new congressional map thst is gerrymandered, discriminatory, and drafted in secret. Now, they're rushing it through committee, leaving voters little time to review or respond before it's finalized.

Here’s what’s wrong:

  • Racial gerrymandering is being used to silence communities of color.
  • Hearings are announced with minimal notice.
  • Proposed maps are released just hours before public testimony.
  • Private D.C. lawyers are advising lawmakers behind closed doors.

We deserve better. Texas deserves better.

Join the League of Women Voters of Texas in demanding a fair, transparent redistricting process that serves all Texans, not just political insiders!

📣 Make your voice heard! Make it count.

In solidarity,

Texans Deserve Fair Maps! Stop HB 4!

HB 4 would redraw Texas Congressional maps only five years after the 2020 Census. The new maps would pack and crack minority communities for the purpose of creating 5 additional Republican leaning districts. The maps are the product of a rushed process, ignore public input, and engage in statistical tricks to avoid the clear implications under the Voting Rights Act.

Here's how you can take action:

It's not too late to tell the legislature to stop playing games with our Congressional representation! The House Congressional Redistricting Committee meeting starts at 10am on Friday, Aug. 1st and could last 10 hours. It is important that individuals let the committee know how the proposed maps will impact them.
