LWVTX Capitol Action Report - 89th Session, Issue 12

LWV Texas | Published on 5/27/2025

The final days of the 89th Legislative session are here, but it's not over yet. There are still opportunities to take action!

There is some cautious optimism regarding some key legislation. Please keep reminding your House representatives that SB 16 would complicate the upcoming statewide elections by forcing local election officials to develop or adopt new procedures at every stage of an election, from registration to list maintenance, to the polling process.

Let’s keep guns out of polling locations! See the updated action alerts for HB 1128 and HB 1794, which are both being heard in the Senate. Another bad gun bill is SB 1362, which could result in the loss of valuable federal grants that support mental health services, violence prevention, and law enforcement across the state—simply because those grants mention Extreme Risk Protective Orders (ERPOs) as one possible use.

There is also still time to take action on HB 1211, which would help former foster children access higher education.

Thank you for your support and dedication during this legislative session. Let's use these last few days of the session to take action toward a better future for Texas!

Take Action!

Don't Make Registering to Vote in Texas Harder!

Say NO to SB 16!

SB 16 not only burdens Texas voters by requiring documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote, it would also add costly and confusing new procedures, such as maintaining two voter rolls and federal-only ballots for certain voters.Contact your State Representative and urge them to say NO to SB 16!

Keep Guns Out of Texas Polling Places!

Say NO to HB 1128 and HB 1794!

Texans must speak up now to keep firearms out of our polling places!Contact your State Representative and urge them to vote NO on HB 1128 and HB 1794!

Support Continuing Education for Foster Youth!

Say YES to HB 1211!

HB 1211 removes the time limit for foster children aging out of foster care to take advantage of tuition and fee waivers for higher education. This ensures that more children in foster care or formerly in foster care can access their essential continuing education benefits. Contact members of the Senate Committee on Education, and urge them to support HB 1211!

Don't Undermine Public Safety! Vote NO on SB 1362!

SB 1362 could result in the loss of valuable federal grants that support mental health services, violence prevention, and law enforcement across the state—simply because those grants mention Extreme Risk Protective Orders (ERPOs) as one possible use. Contact your State Representative, and urge them to vote NO on SB 1362!

Allow Cities and ISDs to Move General Elections!

Say YES to SB 1494! *NEW!*

LWV Texas supports the idea that cities and ISDs should be able to move their general elections from May to November. A statute that allowed this in the past expired, so this bill will temporarily allow certain political subdivisions to change the date on which they hold their election for officers to the uniform November election date in odd-numbered years.Contact your State Representative, and urge them to say YES to SB 1494!
