The current immigration crisis in Del Rio is overwhelming the small community of 35,000 with 15,000 Haitians living under bridges, and facing extreme heat, no food, and poor conditions. The community doesn’t have enough resources to take care of them. The Haitian refugees who have been living in South America have traveled across Mexico to reach the US because they have been lied to by “coyotes” that the US would take them in. Others are escaping Haiti after a terrible devastating earthquake and the assassination of President Jovenel Moise there.
The U.S. government must provide humane treatment for Haitian refugees and all refugees along with medical care, food, and water. The images of Haitian refugees being chased by Border Patrols officers on horseback was reminiscent of slave days in this country and it was totally unacceptable. They are not cattle to be rounded up, but human beings who must be treated with respect and dignity. This is the least that they deserve and as a country this is the least that we can do.
