SB 7 & HB 6 Are Dangerous Election Bills!

The League of Women Voters opposes any legislation that makes voting harder.SB 7 has passed the House and Senate; HB 6 passed the House on May 6.They will have to be reconciled in a conference committee, but it looks like these bad new voting provisions will become law. Continue to send this Action Alert to your legislators!
Texas Voters Have Lost Today!
Texas League President Grace Chimene issued a statement to the press regarding the vote on SB 7 in the Texas House in the very early hours of May 7th.

Support HB 290 and HB 133. They would guard against children being dropped from Medicaid without verifying qualifications and would give new moms twelve months of Medicaid, rather than two.

Nuclear Waste Storage in Texas
We oppose HB 2692 and SB 1046.Both are pending a floor debate in their chambers. Send the Action Alert!
New Court of Appeals
We oppose SB 1529, which would add a special Appeals Court. It passed the Senate and will be heard soon in House State Affairs Committee. Send the Action Alert!
Military/Overseas Voters
We support HB 740 giving instant-runoff voting to these voters. It is now in House Calendars. 

Redistricting Bills
We supported bills for Independent Redistricting Commissions and for HB 3112, the Redistricting Transparency ActThey are dead for this session but may be brought up in the special session for redistricting.

Volunteer Deputy Registrars
We opposed HB 1026which eliminated the role of VDRs. It died in the House Elections Committee.

Asian-American Hate Crimes
We supported this resolution condemning the attacks on Asian Americans; it is now pending in House Calendars.
Vote-by-Mail ID’s
We opposed HB 2478, and it seems to have died in House Calendars. NOTE: It could still be sent to the House floor, so send another Action Alert!
Losses:

Permitless Gun Carry
We opposed HB 1927, but it passed both House and Senate in spite of the majority of Texans (59%) opposing it, according to a recent UT/Texas Tribune poll.

Prison Gerrymandering
We supported HB 3463 to change how prisons are currently considered in redistricting, but it died in committee without a hearing.
Reproductive Justice
We opposed abortion bills SB 8 and HB 1515.SB 8 passed the Senate and the House. HB 1515 is in House Calendars.

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo serves as the chief executive of the Commissioners Court, the county’s governing body. She is the first woman and the first Latina to lead Texas' most populous county.
