Action on Voting Rights Needed Today!

Take Action onSB 7-This bill will limit voting rights for all Texans and will impact the elderly, the disabled, and communities of color the most.

Take Action on HB 6- Thiscomprehensive election bill complicates voting and adds jailable criminal offenses that threaten voters, those assisting voters, and public officials with criminal penalties.

Take Action on HB 530- This bill would allow election judges to carry guns into polling places!
The Lege is Really Heating Up!

Last week was such a busy week for some of our Issue Chairs! See the League'sAdvocacy & Issue pagesfor details.

  • Voting Rights/Election Laws-Cinde Weatherby(Austin Area) and her team were writing and presenting testimony on the two BIG voter restricting bills, SB 7 and HB 6.They also registered our opposition to five other bills (SB 1112, 1113, 1114, 1235, 1340), and support for one bill (SB 331). New Action Alert on HB 6.Check out Cinde's latest blog:Can’t be Intimidated or Wear Out - Keep it Up!
  • Gun Safety-Aimee Mobley Turney(Houston Area) wrote and delivered testimony in opposition to five bills that would loosen requirements for licensing of individuals to carry guns (HB 1094, 1238, 1911, 1927, 2900).
  • Hazardous Waste - Susybelle Gosslee(Dallas) testified in opposition to SB 1046, related to the storage of high-level radioactive waste at the Waste Contol and Storage site in Andrews County.
  • Public Education - Diann Andy(San Antonio) wrote letters to the Senate Education Committee supporting SB 226, 1171, and HB 999 (virtual learning and testing) and opposing SB 28 (charter school oversight).
  • Criminal Justice-Melinda Grayson(Austin Area) registered support for three bills (HB 54, 88, 1396) in the Homeland Security Committee, including the George Floyd Bill and a bill regarding the mentally ill.
  • LWV Texas condemns racism against Asian Americansand Pacific Islanders! We created anAction Alert on HCR 66to support Rep. Gene Wu's resolution to stop Asian-American hate crimes.
  • Equal Opportunity-Amber Briggle(Denton) created anAction Alertto oppose SB 29, which would restrict transgender youth from participating in school sports, and registered in opposition.
