Welcome to voting in Texas! There are three simple steps to voting.

  • Fill out a voter registration form, sign it and mail or turn it in.  You should receive a voter registration card in the mail within 1 month! If you don't, check here to see if you are registered.
  • When you apply for or update your Texas driver's license, you may register to vote or update your voter registration at the same time.
  • The deadline to register to vote for an election is 30 days before the election.
  • You can register to vote when you are 17 years and 10 months old.
  • If the effective date of registration on your voter registration card is on or before Election Day, you can vote any time during early voting or on Election Day.

In Texas you may update your voter registration when you move or change your name.  
You will need your Current Driver License or ID Card, Social Security Number, and Voter Registration Card VUID (Voter Unique Identifier) number which may be found  when you check  am I registered

  • Sign up for voting and election reminders HERE
  • Where do I vote?
    • During early voting you can vote at any voting location in the county where you are registered. 
    • Voting locations are on your County Election website or check out VOTE411.org.
    • On Election Day, voters who live in counties with County Wide Voting Centers can vote  at any voting location. Voters who live in counties without County Wide Voting Centers must vote at their assigned voting location. Check your County Election website or the Texas Secretary of State's website.
  • Vote early! In Texas, we have two weeks of early voting for most elections!
  • To vote by mail you must qualify.

  • Texas has 254 counties! Each county is responsible for voter registration, where to vote, when to vote, how to vote, what is on the ballot, how to become a Volunteer Deputy Registrar or an election worker. Get to know your county election website here.
  • Voters in Texas have to show an ID to vote. Learn what ID to take when you go vote.
  • Use of mobile phones and tablets are prohibited in the voting booth, but the law allows you to take the printed ballot or Voters Guide with you. Go to VOTE411.org to print your choices or to your county election website to print a sample ballot.
  • The Republican and Democratic Parties choose the candidates who run in the General Election in the primary election. The Libertarian and Green Parties choose their candidates in party conventions. Texas has open primaries. That means that ALL Texas voters can participate in one of these events.
