Jun 25 - 2013 - Shelby v. Holder Decision - VRA Challenge

#OnThisDay in 2013, the Supreme Court of the US (SCOTUS) ruled 5-4 that Section 4(b) of the Voters Right Act (VRA) was unconstitutional because the coverage formula was outdated and not “grounded in current conditions.” As a consequence, Section 5 is intact, but inoperable until Congress agrees on a new Section 4 formula. The #VRA is a landmark federal law enacted in 1965 to remove race-based restrictions on voting.
